Japanese

Students at Nundah State School are taught Japanese as a second language from Year 4 onwards.

Australia sits on the southwest rim of the Pacific Ocean right next door to Southeast Asia. Our nation is virtually on the doorstep of almost half of the world's population living in the amazingly diverse societies on the Asian continent. Our proximity ensures that the futures of Asia and Australia are inextricably linked. Both the Department of Education and the National Curriculum for Languages recognise the importance of providing opportunities for Australian children to learn Asian languages and take advantage of the exciting possibilities of the “Asian Century”.

At Nundah State School Japanese is introduced in Year 4 and taught , until the end of upper primary with the allocated time increasing as the students move to upper primary. In Years 4 and 5 the focus is on basic vocabulary, greetings, self-introduction, and sentence patterns describing the immediate world of the students such as family, school and friends. Students learn Japanese primarily through speaking and listening during these grades.

In Years 6 the students learn more complex sentence patterns and specialised vocabulary such as adjectives and adverbs pertaining to the unit of study. The topics of work expand from the self and involve the student in considering the wider world around them. As well as speaking and listening comprehension, students learn to write and read Japanese hiragana script in upper year levels and to compose sentences using this script. Awareness and knowledge of Japanese culture, both traditional and modern, are introduced as appropriate to each year level.
