Our learning framework
At Nundah State School we are implementing the Curiosity and Powerful Learning framework as our overarching, evidence-based resource to inform our teaching, learning, assessment, routines and learning spaces. Over the past 9 years, this has allowed Nundah State School to deeply develop and ingrain a supportive learning framework based around our school beliefs, values and the Nundah 10 gifts. Over the next 4 years, we are aiming to further develop components of the CPL framework to enhance our well-being, teaching and learning, assessment practices and facilities.
Teaching and learning processes
Reading and writing
Nundah teachers utilise the Reading to Learn approach to deliver key elements of the English curriculum area. Our teachers are building their understanding of the Department of Education's Reading Position and we are exploring as a school, how we can best incorporate this information into our teaching practise. All Nundah staff have been trained in the use of the THRASS tool as a whole school approach to developing consistent language around the teaching of phonics.
This whole school implementation has resulted in significant student learning gains and we continue to refine our planning and delivery through further training, coaching and analysis of student data.
eLearning
Nundah State School received a Wireless upgrade and has received Step 1 of the Queensland Government's Bandwidth upgrade program to improve capacity for use of devices across the school.
Students in Years 3-6 participate in our BYO iPad program to allow for greater access, enhancement and personalisation of learning. The school maintains a high number of iPads for the use of lower school students. All teachers and teacher aides are provided with school owned iPads to assist with their skills and the management of our iPad program.
Staff and students make good use of digital technologies and eLearning tools as an essential part of preparing them for future learning.
Pedagogies of Belonging
Developing personal and social competencies are key
As part of the Australian Curriculum, students develop their personal and social capabilities.
This is a major area of focus in all curriculum areas at Nundah State School, where we utilise a wide range of Pedagogies of Belonging to ensure our students learn to understand themselves and others, and manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively.
Students learn a range of skills including recognising and regulating emotions, developing empathy for others and understanding relationships, establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills.
Students with well-developed social and emotional skills find it easier to manage themselves, relate to others, develop resilience and a sense of self-worth, resolve conflict, engage in teamwork and feel positive about themselves and the world around them. The development of personal and social capability is a foundation for learning and for citizenship.
Some of the tools we use as part of our Pedagogies of Belonging are:
- Our Helping Hands (Needs, Thinking, Acting and Gratitude) developed at Nundah State School
- The 5 Prep Expectations
- We Thinkers
- Play is the Way
- Switch4Schools
- Doug the Dragster
- Play ConneCTors
- Peaceful Kids
